image jc hayward. the storm that is expected to hit the northeast came to our region with just a dplapsing blow. we are showing you footage from leesburg, virginia, parts of pennsylvania, new york and boston are bracing for the worst. >> the same system that brought us the rain and snow this morning is going to be the primary blizzard for the northeast. we may get a little bit more rain this affect, even some snow showers but we will be just too far south and west to get much other than some windy conditions from that. -- this afternoon. this is marshall, virginia this morning. they had about two inches of snow. a real pretty scene. i have another one you want to share with you.

four to five inches of snow reported. this is the type of wet snow that clings to everything. in western loudoun, they had about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. a little dusting here and there with the snow and sleet. the storm itself, you can see this thing spinning just offshore. there is the second line of showers that we'll be watching through later this afternoon. that is a front that will come through bringing us some wind and some colder temperatures for tonight and saturday. big picture, look at the snows that have been moving into southern new york, connecticut, all the way up towards boston. this other storm has been throwing the snows across the i- 90 corridor up into new england. they've had 6 inches of snow in parts of maine and this snow will be prolific, 2 feet be maybe more than that across parts of new england. for us, temperature in the 30s

to low 40s. and 1.6 inches rain down in leeville. once that line of showers moves through, you may see a break or two in the overcast. temperatures not going to get much warmer into the lower 40s butt winds are going to be picking up big time tonight. i'll be back in a few minutes and we'll talk about what can you expect for the rest of your weekend. back to you. >> thank you. the storm is canceling travel plans for residents in new england. united airlines canceled 2,000 flights nationwide. we have a report from rag and national airport. >> reporter: about a dozen flights to new york have been canceled, eight so far to boston. all though are in the afternoon. word is as of noon today, logan airport in boston shut down. however, folks heading to new england able to score an early morning flight were lucky. >> i was here last night to get my flight out. >> reporter: kathy white is boston-bound and hoping to fly out early before beantown gets

buried. >> i was to leave at 12:30. my husband called and said no, that is dim not going to work. >> reporter: crews are planning to work around the clock in new england and massachusetts governor duval patrick sending one message to bay state residents. stay inside. >> the other good thing is it is on the weekend so that gives people the opportunity, they're not on the roads so i'm hoping for the best. >> so get that fire going and enjoy it. the first goal is to get home first. >> and coffee. >> reporter: if you are trying to get to new england and couldn't get an early morning flight, chances are you are out of luck. you will likely have to ride out the storm here in the mid- atlantic. from philadelphia to maine, residents are preparing. parts of new england could get 3 feet of snow with 75-mile an hour winds. marine layery hull has latest from hartford, connecticut. >> reporter: the first flakes started falling in new jersey

around 6:00 a.m. new york city joggers and dog walkers took the friday morning flurries in stride but by tomorrow, manhattan could be buried under a foot of snow. >> if it is crazy, stay in. if not, keep on moving. >> reporter: parts of new york and new jersey that are still recovering from superstorm sandy are bracing for powerful winds and storm surges. hundreds of plow trucks are ready to spread 250,000 tons of salt on city streets and roadways. here in hartford, connecticut, people are preparing for two feet of snow. power outages are a major concern because hurricane-force winds are expected to hit the city. this home depot in manchester, connecticut was busy this morning. people are stocking up on salt, flashlights and other storm supplies. >> i got some extra flashlights. as long as you've got everything you need, the not that bad. i wouldn't say i welcome it, that's for sure. >> reporter: amtrak trains will stop running between new york

and boston this afternoon. and many airports across new england are shutting down, canceling thousands of flights. marine layery hull for cbs news. hartford, connecticut. >> you can track that storm when you are away from your television. log onto wusa9.com. and to get the late forecast, there is the wusa9.com weather app for android and iphone. we have breaking news regarding the search for the body of a 2-year-old girl that police say was murdered by her mother. authorities in ann run del county say they found the body of 2-year-old cassidy booth at a trash facility in jessup, maryland this morning. charging documents say that the mother, chelsea booth was driven to smother her daughter because of a curse. booth also told investigators that she discarded the child's body in a nearby dumpster.

a cab driver is in custody and facing charges after a teenager was struck and killed in oxon hill. the victim was walking along wheeler road when he was hit last night. witnesses describe the striking vehicle as a cab and told police that the driver headed towards the southern avenue metro station. that is where officers arrested the driver. a judge has decided to keep hearings into the 2001 chandra levy murder case closed to the press and also to the public. hearings have been under way behind closed doors for the last several weeks. cbs news reported that those hearings have something to do with one of the prosecution witnesses in ingmar guandique's 2010 murder trial. he was convicted of killing levy. he was serving a 60-year sentence and the judge says details eventually will be made public. the district of columbia's

ethics board says it has found substantial evidence that d.c. council member jam graham violated the city's code of conduct when he intervened in the warding of a lottery contract. but the board says it is not pursuing the matter any further because it has no authority to punish him. graham strongly denies any wrongdoing. we now know what caused that massive power outage during sunday's super bowl. they say it was an electrical rely that failed and caused the 34-minute blackout. company officials say the part has now been replaced. speaking of the super bowl, i acquired a new best friend while i was there covering the game last week. sheryl underwood from the cbs daytime show the talk is in my studio and i'm going to be talking to her in just a

there has been a break in the manhunt for a former lapd police officer wanted in a string of murders. investigators found christopher dorner's truck burning on a remote road near big bear lake, california. authorities say that dorner left a manifesto threatening to hurt l.a. police officers and their families because he was fired in 2008. >> we'll keep working on it until we're able to either locate the suspect or determine he is no longer in the big bear valley. >> right now, dorner is accused of killing one police officer and two others with ties to the department. they are bracing for what could be a big nor'easter in

chance of some snow tonight. this thing is cranking out here. there is lightning with this. the sign of intensification and you can see this thing spinning counterclockwise coming up the coast. there have been heavy snows already for parts of connecticut. storm number 2 coming in from the west. the energy has to transfer. this thing will pound out the snow across the northeast. there is that second line i'm talking about. it is out to the west now. some rain maybe wet snowflakes about to head towards winchester, across junk, coming through hancock. garrett county. you are seeing some of that snow as well. sprinkles and snowflakes here strasbourg southwest. culpeper county down to the madison county line had about 4 to 5 inches of snow early this morning. temperatures are running in the 30s and 40s here. providence is 32. but it is up here where they are seeing temperatures cold enough to support all snow and heavy snow at that. right now in washington, 41.

it feels like it is 34 outside. the humidity is still high, 89%. there is that dampness in the air. of the two storms coming together in the northeast, you see this first one coming out of michigan, all the heavy snow is here from buffalo right across new york state in toward maine. they've had several inches of snow already in maine. here is our other piece of energy, this monster coming up the coast. there are blizzard warnings out from new york city to boston and southern maine right now. around here, we'll watch the showers coming across this afternoon. snow showers in the mountains. so skiing will be good this weekend. look at the snows wrapping around the storm. they could get 3, 4, 5, 6 inches of snow from that. we are not going to get any snow from this. tomorrow morning, 3:00 a.m., we'll take it to 7:00 a.m. hudson valley may start to clear out by then. eastern new england, still snowing and for us, we are looking at a nice sunny

saturday. kind of windy in the morning, less wind in the afternoon. and sunday is going to be the much better day of the weekend although some clouds will increase late in the day. look like another chance of rain will get here by monday. snowfall potential, this is a computer model, not the computer model, not the gospel but i want to show you the snow potential still in spots in southeastern new england. that is 2 feet plus. this may be underdown in some areas down here. this will be one for the history books here before it is done. around here this afternoon, 4 3- rbgs a few showers, maybe wet snowflake mixed in. tonight-- 43, a few showers, maybe wet snowflakes mixed in. 39 tomorrow, it will be sunny but told and windy as we head towards sunday, the nicer day of the weekend, milder, mid- 40s. monday look wet again, 54. by tuesday, 52. and from wednesday into

today is the beginning of chinese new year. my best friend is here with me. and courtesy of zango, i want you to meet chef graham bartlett. this is the year of the what? >> the snake. >> i know how we said about snake. >> we are not going to cook any snakes. we have a couple sample menus. we'll feature the scallop and bacon dumplings. the web site is online. real easy to prepare at home. got some nice quality scallops. some bacon, we made that crispy and saute that off. a little bit of honey. we'll mick that together with green onion and a little bit of salt and pepper. put it in the food processorrened and in the en, this is what you wind up with. that is the filling for the
